John Adler (D-N.J.)

Current Position:  U.S. Representative (since January 2009)

Why He Matters

Adler got blown out in his first bid to win New Jersey's 3rd district House seat, long a Republican stronghold. That was 1990. Eighteen years later, he tried again, and won.

The Harvard-trained lawyer had burnished his political resume in the New Jersey state Senate, chairing the chamber's Judiciary Committee and authoring successful public-health and ethics-reform bills. Adler also benefited from the retirement of 12-term incumbent Rep. Jim Saxton (R), who had defeated him in 1990.

With fundraising help from the national Democratic Party, Adler edged out a local GOP mayor, Chris Myers. The freshman congressman, who was assigned to the House Veterans and Financial Services committees, has toed the party line on most issues.

But he is expected to face a strong Republican challenge in 2010, adding to the pressure on him as he weighs health-care reform and other key Democratic agenda items.
