Why He Matters
Labeled the "accidental congressman" by Republicans for succeeding scandal-tarred ex-Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio), this former public defender and consumer-rights attorney has since solidified his grasp on Ohio's 18th district.
Space has voted with House Democrats the majority of the time during his House tenure, but the Blue Dog Democrat has bucked his party on occasion, including during the 2009 health-care reform debate.
A second-generation Greek immigrant and former Kenyon College football player, the member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee was part of the group of Blue Dogs who during summer 2009 slowed consideration of a House health-reform bill it considered too liberal.

Health-Care Reform
As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Health subcommittee, Space was one of several Blue Dogs to sign a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in July 2009 urging him to slow down the debate over health-care reform.
Space objected to the House proposals that all contained a public option, arguing that such an option had to be based on negotiated rates rather than imitate the Medicare system.
The Network
As a member of the House Blue Dogs and House Energy and Commerce Committee, Space works closely with lawmakers who share similar roles, such as Reps. Mike Ross (D-Ark.), Parker Griffith (D-Ala.) and Marion Berry (D-Ark.).
