Ryan Derousseau didn’t know what to do with his English degree out of undergrad. It was either teach, a thought frightening not only to him, but also to all the unsuspecting parents and kids. The other option was journalism. He had experience at his college paper, The Daily Texan — Texas University at Austin’s daily rag — writing about various sports including golf, swimming and college football. But he didn’t see much future in his sports writing career due to his inability to objectively discuss Texas football or Kansas University basketball.
He moved to New York University for graduate school, where he specialized in business and economic reporting. His original plan of becoming a feature writer at the top magazines in the business world were soon crushed as he witnessed a round of lay-offs at Fortune Magazine, where he first interned after finishing grad school. It became unavoidable that online news would be his and the field of journalism’s future, so he joined the team at Whorunsgov.com in December 2008.
This is Ryan’s first foray living in Washington, D.C., and writing about the political world. Despite the initial shock of seeing how clean the Metros are and a Fuddrucker’s in Chinatown, he’s enjoyed his stay.
Ryan has interned at Fortune Magazine, Forbes Magazine, Inc.com, Fastcompany.com and Star Community Newspapers — a group of suburban papers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
