Government Accountability Fail, The Obama Way
President Barack Obama appeared on the popular American television program, The Daily Show starring comedian Jon Stewart. On this segment, Obama was was under the hot lamp about the continual fails of government and the continuing scandals that have emerged under his watch. Doing what lawyers do best, Obama sidestepped the responsibility to others and defended some agencies like the IRS.
During this appearance on the show, Obama did more comedy than Stewart. His answers to Stewart’s questions had some merit, but also lent themselves to more ridicule. Scandal has followed Obama since day one of his presidency. He’s had to face unprecedented opposition and downright hostility from multiple sources. Scandals involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and the IRS to name a few. The Office of Personnel management has been called in to ask the right questions and get the right answers regarding these government fails under Obama’s watch.
To shore up his argument, Obama focused on the IRS. He basically stated that the IRS has had problems due to low funding and for Congress passing what he opinionated as a “crummy law” that led to the allegations of the agency purposely targeting the Tea Party political group. He stated that the scandals emerged when employees of the IRS applied the laws, “poorly and stupidly.”. To be fair, Obama didn’t mention the rank and file IRS employees, managers, field agents have to go through. Anyone who has worked for the IRS or knows someone who does or has, knows it can be a miserable and exhausting job.
To have a sitting president call federal employees essentially, “stupid”, probably will be a morale killer for sure. Obama didn’t mention, however, that the IRS’ own Internal Auditor did indeed conclude that the IRS, in fact, did target both the Tea Party groups and other conservative groups for extra scrutiny. In addition the President’s own Dept. of Justice continues conducting criminal investigations into the targeting.
It appears the President forgot all that.
Disappointingly, the President called for more funding for the IRS so that the agency could act more efficiently and go after those avoiding taxes, but he didn’t mention the fact that the majority of workers’ taxes go to corporate subsidies, the same corporations that fund the lawmakers who cut the funding for the IRS in the first place.
Mr. Obama still has some ‘splainin’ to do on these issues.
