Republicans And Science: Like Oil And Water
The last GOP debate raised the issue again regarding the Republicans’ legendary denial of scientific data if it doesn’t fit their financial and control agendas. Sen. Rand Paul brought the spotlight on the GOP’s desire to overturn President Obama’s Clean Power Plan that is designed to put carbon emissions under control.
The Republicans and their energy lobby could care less if they polluted the entire planet as long as they made a profit. They would probably only notice things had gone from bad to worse after they realized they’d poisoned everyone on Earth and there was no one to buy their products.
There are two reasons for this kind of mindset. First, just greed. Blind greed by industrialists who have no conscience nor fore thinking. To them, it’s consume, dominate, consume, dominate, until all resources are expired. Then they turn on each other like a pack of starving wolves and the cycle begins all over again.
When science is in their favor, however, you’ll see the Republicans beating the drum all day and night. The other factor is unfortunately the evangelical base of the Republican Party. Their only objective is to maintain their control by controlling science and discovery. Even when it flies in the face of common sense. The GOP doesn’t want to disenfranchise this huge group as its the bulk of their voters and funding. If the GOP offends them one iota, the backlash becomes overwhelming. This mindset unfortunately hampers scientific investigation, finding new medicines, new fuel sources, textiles, and more. The only time science is allowed to flourish under these people is in times of war. Then all the funding and resources possible are thrown at scientists who normally wouldn’t have employment were it not for the military industrial complex.
Rand Paul and his ilk have to keep their power base and if that means tossign science to the wind, so be it. They have to maintain power in order to be in control of federal money and resources to promote more industry and war. It’s their lifesblood and they don’t care how much misery and woe they lay across the globe.
We find these attacks against science from the right wing especially if it crosses religious lines. Fear that science will invalidate a religious belief thus lessening control over people’s viewpoints is a primary issue and has polluted academia for over a century especially where evolution and archaeology are concerned. Now it’s climate change.
The public’s only defense is to keep pouring on the science and letting the facts spell out the reality or a nightmare will be Earth’s future.
